The first step to driving in Ireland is taking the driver theory test. This test is the gateway to your learner permit as you cannot apply for your permit without a certificate from this test. To pass , you need to learn and familiarise yourself with the rules of the road, road signage and markings, and some general maintenance knowledge for a car.
As with any exam, preparation is key and we have outlined some helpful, structured tips on how to prepare, and pass, your theory test in Ireland.
Study the Driver Theory Test manual
The RSA’s Official Driver Theory Test Manual covers the questions and answers that may arise on the theory test for car, motorcycle and work vehicle licences. This manual is available as a physical book, CDs and through an online learning resource and these are available in English, Irish, and Irish Sign Language.
These manuals help you to become a good driver by not only teaching you the rules of the road, but also helping you assess your risk and hazard awareness, and your driving behaviour. All of these highlight ways to become a skilled driver - one who is capable, considerate and economical on the roads.
Download the Driver Theory Test App
More recently, the RSA Driver Theory Test app has been popular among many new drivers too. As well as helping you to learn on the go, you can test your knowledge in advance of the real thing with access to practice tests and mock driver theory tests in-app. It even tracks your progress, so you can monitor improvements and see those areas that need more focus.

Apply for your theory test online
You need 35 correct answers out of 40 multiple-choice questions to pass the test, so once you get a good score on your practice test, it’s time to book for the real one. Book your test on the official driver theory test website where you can choose your local test centre - there are 40 around Ireland - or the one most convenient to you.
All aspiring new drivers who wish to take the test will be asked to choose their test category. These are Category A for motorcycles and mopeds licence, Category BW for cars, work vehicles and land tractors licence, Category C for heavy commercial vehicles, and Category D for bus licence. The car driver theory test costs €45, payable at the time of booking.
Documents needed to book the test
When booking you will need certain documents which you should also bring to the testing centre on the day of your test. You will need:
your ID: passport, Irish passport card, your public services card with photo, National Identity Card from EU/EEA Member States or Switzerland, or another valid Irish driving licence type, and
your PPSN (Personal Public Service Number).
Additional theory test supports
If you need additional support for sitting your test, the test centres will be able to assist. They offer dyslexia support, an Irish Sign Language interpreter and video clips, automated and in-person reader services, a recorder service, as well as extra time allowances. You can also request an interpreter for your theory test providing sufficient advance notice is given to source someone for you.
More details on these supports can be found on the Test Day Assistance Support section of the driver theory test website.
